About Me:
I live in Claypool [between Globe & Miami, 90 miles east of PHX} I have been an organic gardener about 40 years. I spent 10 years in TX just north of Houston and there I grew most of the food for my family. Due to cost of water I haven't done so much since moving back to AZ but have decided I want to do this again. I restarted my gardens in Sept of 08 and have been harvesting greens since Oct. I have big plans for the coming years.

Growin' On

Well the harvest tally for June is in, a measly 20 odd pounds. ;-( Because I was really sick all of April and the first part of May, that certainly didn't help things out. And still working out succession planting for my area. But now with the really warm weather, especially warm nights, things are really taking off. Lima beans have hit 11 FEET & STILL going, the squash is running, the jicama have finally quite pouting and are starting to run. Lots of big green paste tomatoes for later and… Continue

New stuff

Well, lots of things going on around here besides the usual working and babysitting. Working on a new rabbit cage, this first one will hold our 4 does. I'll build another one later for the 2 bucks, with a couple of spare spaces in case I need them. I anticipate that rabbit will replace chicken in our diet this winter.

Some of the potatoes in the ground went yellow and I dug them up...discovered that under the top few inches the dirt was dry, otherwise they probably would have hung on… Continue

Varieties Growing in 2009

I have been curious just how many varieties of edible plants I am growing so finally started a list. It comes to 132 varieties, a far cry from the Dervaes family with over 300 but a good start. The list include things we've harvested since Jan 1 and things in the ground now, but does not include the seeds still waiting to be planted.

Heating Up

Well it's definitely heating up around here. Has run about 96 all week though it was cooling off to about 56 at night, last night [that is actually 6 this morning] it was still 62. have had to start running the cooler a bit but only a couple of hours in the afternoon and as soon as it's cooler outside than in I turn the pump off to save water. Most of the peas have pooped out and have just let the last few grow for seed. The rest of them will soon be coming out and the cucumbers, okra, malabar… Continue

spring was short!

I recorded my last 32 degree night on April 16. then a couple of weeks the night temps hovered around 40. Now we are up to 56 at night and over 80 in the day time. So spring really didn't hang around very long! I know the peas won't last much longer, the end of the month at the longest. In the meantime gearing up for summer, corn, squash, beans, okra, et. I've had a bad case of bronchitis since the beginning of april, so haven't been able to haul any manure or sawdust. BUT 2-4 inches of dry… Continue
