The American Drift What is it??

The American Drift was formed in 2009 to help American Rabbit breeders diversify thier breeding lines and to get rabbits into the hands of new breeders.  It is going on now and American rabbits are moving from the East coast to the west coast and west coast to east coast.  The drivers are covering 12,000 miles this year.  Most of the Rabbits traveling are young Juniors bucks and does.  I will be meeting the drivers to pick up two and help with any chores they may have like cleaning cages or babysitting the rabbits while the driver takes a cat nap.  Or even delivering a meal.  They started in Wisconsin picking up the first rabbits and will be dropping off and picking up all through the country.  Its an amazing feet there are between 100 and 150 rabbits being moved.  This morning I met a Northern AZ breeder in cordes junction to pick up a rabbit to transfer at my pickup on tuesday.  that rabbit is headed to Northern California to the breeder that  provided with my first American rabbit.  Genetic diversity is very important in keeping this endangered breed growing healthy.  There are more breeders now but The American Rabbit is listed as the 5th most endangered  meat Rabbit breed with  The American Livestock conservancy.  There is a Yahoo group devoted to the drift where anyone interested can follow the movement of animals.  This group of breeders is very concerned with the future of the breed  and this is just one solution they have come up with to prevent the many issues that can come with too much in breeding or line breeding and keep the breed stronger.

This is too weird because I just saw some students hanging out at the MU (ASU) with their pet rabbit! Twilight zone anyone?

How smart and interesting! Thanks for sharing this. I guess I'm lucky that quail aren't livebearers. ;)

Its great.  We get regular updates and pictures are being taken at each stop and posted to the Drift group.  Its really fun watching this all unfold.  They did have set the schedule back by 24 hours so she would stop and rest so my stop is now on wednesday.
