supporting growing and using herbs in the Sonoran Desert

The AZ Herb Association is an educational nonprofit, established to encourage growing, using and understanding herbs and herbal lore.

Lately, I've been saying "Lunch in a Box" meaning that out in one of our garden "boxes" there is food to be harvested for lunch or dinner. I like thinking of it that way - and today, I harvested probably the last of my kale. Guess what I'm making for lunch? This - Tuscan Kale Salad and home made whole wheat bread. I think it's all a state of mind what we call something, don't you?

I've got two plants still going - covered them because the stinkn' birds thought they belonged at their table. My spinach was doing fine too...until the birds chomped down. I'd love to stretch the lettuce season as well....it's like tricking mother nature or something. :-)

Speaking of lettuce...which I miss soooooo much (mine bolted a few months ago) because it's so great not buying it in the stores....have either of you ever raised it in the summer in a greenhouse or some other way? I guees its hard to fight the heat making it bitter.

Hi Lylah-I'm Marilyn. I am SO happy to have found you on the web. I also live in the Phx area and have been looking for other bloggers to gain inspiration from and I've found it here! We've been "raised bed" gardening for 3 yrs now and learning every season. I'm also sad that my lettuce is turning bitter-I haven't bought lettuce since last Oct.....I'll be back to see what you are up to!

It was sooooooooo good. I wish we could grow this stuff longer than we can. I clipped just about all of mine. Makes me sad :-(
