The 1st Annual Herb Festival is a full day of fun & education - all about Herbs!
Our 2017 program will focus on the following topics:
Our main speaker is Erica Guinn, an herbalist with a particular affinity for the local, native medicine plants. She teaches wildcrafting, plant conservation and stewardship, and plant identification at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts in Tempe, AZ. Erica studied under herbalists JoAnn Sanchez of Botanica and John Slattery of Desert Tortoise Botanicals.
Herbal Medicine in America: Past, Present and Future: will cover the history of the use of plant medicines from the time of colonization of North America, through the rising of the Regulars, Eclectics and Thomsonians, and on to the current use of herbal medicine by Naturopaths, folk herbalists, clinical herbalists and laypersons alike.
Creating Culinary Herbal Salts, Sugars & Compound Butters: A live demonstration on how to make your own Herbal Salt blends for savory dishes, Herbal Sugar blends for sweet treats and Compound butters that will wow your guests and please your palette!
Guided Tour of AZ Herb Association's Demonstration Gardens: Join veteran Herb Gardeners, Mike Hills and Kirti Mathura, as they lead you on a learning adventure through our very own beautiful and productive Herb Gardens on location.
Hands on Herb Propagation Workshop: Get your hands dirty and pot up your very own baby plants, in this workshop lead by Pam Perry. Pam will cover the basics of seed starting, starting cuttings and dividing up clumping herbs.
Introduction to Roses as Herbs: Steve Young, ARS Master Rosarian and curator of the Heritage Rose Garden, talks about Roses as herbs. Roses are more than a pretty flower – they are useful plants worthy of a place in your herb garden.
This will be the AZ Herb Festival's #1 event of the year! Participants will be able to attend each program, no need to choose between topics you find interesting. Similar daylong educational events have ticket prices double this or more; so don’t wait until this one of a kind sells out to purchase your tickets. All proceeds support the local non-profit AZ Herb Association, our Jayne Hanes Scholarship Fund and your Maricopa Master Gardeners.
