Clover vs Bermuda

Clover is a very different plant from bermuda grass, although the clover can get invasive as well.

At The Farm, I just let the clover grow; I don't mow it.  It can get 18 - 24 inches tall during cooler weather.  It develops a nice duff underneath it.  I'm not sure how it would work for a lawn substitute.  For one, if you didn't mow it, the height would probably classify it as a weed for purposes of Phoenix zoning ordinances, and if a neighbor complained you'd have to battle…

Rogue Chickens

A few months ago I told you about my garden floor--the New Zealand White Clover.  It's great for a number of reasons--it suppresses weeds, it conserves moisture, it pumps nitrogen into the soil, it keeps me from having to walk through mud.  Over the last 9 years it has spoiled me, and suddenly I'm having to do without.

Orchard Density

Thanks for your comments.

I just spent about an hour writing about orchard density--partly in response for pictures and a tour--and lost the message in a hiccough.  I'll try again some other time.  Just please be patient.

Garden Walls, Windscreen, and Microclimate

OK, I seem to be getting the hang of the blog system now.

I told you about my garden floor, so before I get into talking about what I've learned about fruit trees, I'll tell you first about the garden walls.…

Urban Orchard in Central Phoenix

I've wanted a place to share about my orchard for a long time now.  I've been doing this since about 2003, and have picked up a lot of information by trial and error over the years.  Perhaps it could be of use to someone else.  I have over 50 trees on about a half acre of SRP irrigated land in a Phoenix inner-city neighborhood--citrus, figs, stonefruits, apples, pomegranates, persimmons, pecans.  I'm not too good with…
