Support and Advice Please

Well today was a very good day. I was very lucky to have Vynnie come by and give us advice for the garden. As Catherine has been telling me my problem is I don't have enough dirt in my soil... lol I did try the vermiculite and it really hasn't been in the beds long enough for me to know if it is working but today I was convinced to just put some fill dirt in and weed the beds. I really hope I'm not setting myself up for disaster with that but I feel I have no choice left.

Quail Feeding Frenzy fix.

We wanted an easy way to feed the quail.  It took a little trial and error.

Cameron put together an external loading feeder system using cheap pvc pipe.  At first we were using to severe an angle on our connectors which caused the feed to stick in the pipe.  Once we solved the angle issues so the feed would slide smoothly into the feeder we discovered that quail love to scratch, kick and shovel feed with their little heads.  Since we are using screen bottom pens for easy cleaning, all…

Peachtree Pruning Disaster

Hi All,

I have a Desert Gold peach tree, about eight-years-old, heavy producer. The tree has six scaffold branches extending off the main trunk at about a 45-degree angle. Last summer, after its peaches ripened, the tree grew a large number of vertical branches (straight up) off the scaffold branches. These branches are LONG, about six to eight feet. Over the winter I (foolishly) did not cut them off. Now, even though I thinned the tree by at least 400 peaches (no kidding),…

The Garden Battle...

I decided to try using the blog feature here, might be doing it wrong but this just felt bigger than a forum question. It's a long story but I'll try to make it short.

To get to the point first lets start with current day and then go back....

I have currently 16, raised beds 2 foot deep, by 3.5' x 5.5' filled with a soil mix from Western Organics that was supposed to be good for this purpose... These boxes are arranged all but one box in a 23' x 26' area in my…

Green Monster Smoothie

What to do with all the garden produce?

  • Eat it.
  • Donate it to friends, neighbors, family etc.

Even then, it keeps coming.

This newbie heard about Green Monster Smoothies at a Toastmaster's meeting.  Quick internet searches yielded some recipes that looked possible.  Here's one - but feel free to substitute, add etc.

In a 6-cup blender put 2 cups of cold milk (we use rice or coconut milk).

Add the meal from 1/2 cup flax seed (ground…

Peppers, Peppers and...

We returned from our annual vacation to Sedona/Jerome area to find Jalepenos finally coming in! I also came home to a mailer packet full of seeds. Several kinds of Peppers, Tomatillos, melons, and more. Some to plant now, some for later in the year, and various types of lettuce specifically for the indoor Aquaponics system I plant to work on this summer.

The next day a friend took me to Gardeners' World east of us on Baseline, and I picked up 6 Banana Pepper starter plants that have…
