About Me:
I am even shyer online than in person, so writing this is not easy! I own a 50 year old house in Tempe, about a mile from ASU, not irrigated. In front, have removed Bermuda, mostly, and have gravel, fruit trees, old roses and raised beds with mixed vegs, herbs, and flowers. This past winter, wrapped the front, south facing, with greenhouse film that covered the raised beds and front porch. Had greenhouse and passive solar heating. It worked really well, but looked awful (one friend kept muttering about Hazmat abatement) Just got 4 Americana chicks 6 weeks ago, hopefully all pullets. The backyard is a disaster, dead grass, dirt, and dog manure.

Free Jujube tree for the digging

This has been growing at my house for 3 years. It looks like an 8ft bush, but could be pruned into a standard. I think it is a 'Li'. It is low water use, deciduous, and very thorny. Produces a large crop, but am finding I just don't use them. Have a handful of fruit in the freezer if you want to try them.

MinHaven update

The goats, 2 Nigerian Dwarf Does, have been here a month this week. They are looking much better, hooves trimmed, brushed daily, wormed, and lots of good food. They are also feeling better, judging from the bucking, running, and playing I've been seeing lately. Milking is going better too. The ducks, 3 Muscovys hopefully 1 male and 2 females, are two months old this week. They are turning out to be top of the pecking order, even over the goats. The first time they helped me milk, they went from… Continue

Dorian Gray Garden Syndrome

I am so discouraged with my garden experiment! Last year, at this time, my front beds were full of tomatoes, herbs, and flowers. I know I am sounding as sad and pathetic as my cilantro and parsley look, but no one even said they liked my sculpture! Of the snow pea seeds I planted, 7 came up, and last year had a 10 foot productive row. I need to find the inspiration to try some more, but... OK, I'm done, that was my Wa Wa Wa.

December Update

My sense of time gets so screwy when I am waiting for seeds to come up! I've had really good and really bad results with seeds at various times, so it is hard to have faith and keep watering.

My property is 70x105 ft, front facing south. From the street there is 5 foot easement, covered in gravel, planting bed that covers two sides of the front, about 100 line feet, width varies. In the streetside bed are roses, mostly old or climbers, rosemary, Salvia "Victoria" and a couple of… Continue

Never  mind.  Dave texted me an image of the bill of sale, so everything is okay.  Thanks!

Okay, so Amy Kowalik from AGS emailed to let me know that Annie Oakley is still registered in your name.  Do you have a copy of the bill of sale?  According to Amy, if I get a copy of the sale from you to Wish We Had Acres, I can send it in with the bill of sale that I received from Dave and Laura in order to register her.  If you have it, would you mind scanning it and emailing it to me at  Thanks!

Hi, Lisette.  I purchased a goat from Laura Denyes and Dave Hamilton that is apparently still registered in your name.  The goat is Annie Oakley and the registration certificate that I have still has your name on it.  She is one of my best milkers, and I would like to well her offspring with papers.  Trying to track down the correct info from AGS and Wish We Had Acres.  Hopefully, Dave will get updated paperwork to me soon, but I haven't heard back from him in a while.   I may need to get a copy of the bill of sale or transfer from you, if you still have a copy of it.  Will let you know what transpires.  Thanks!  Hope you are doing well.

Hi Lisette - alas, I don't have that access any more for this site.  Perhaps the "Class Coordinator" could help out?  Sorry =(

It was very nice meeting you Lis! Thank you so much for the tour and sharing your information on gardening with us.

I am near 40th Street and Cactus.  Do you want help prepping for the tour?  I can come by for a look see and you could put me to work for a few hours if needed.  I'm looking at friendlyaquaponics system.  I could even get certified organic with their system but haven't decided how big to go yet.  Let me know if I can be of help.

Hi Lis, I joined the aquaponics group and am planning a raft system.  Can't wait to be a bacteria farmer too. Have you seen these people in Mesa who turned their pool into an aquaponics greenhouse?  Great idea.

Hello Lisette. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. I have some EM1 solution that is being made right now, but it will take a month or so until it is ready for use. I do have some EM1 inoculated wheat bran (bokashi) that I'd be happy to share with you. I use it for bokashi composting, which is throwing organic wastes (mostly food scraps) into an airtight container (I use 5 gallon buckets) and layering with the bokashi. I don't pre compost food for my worms unless it's a fresh horse manure (to avoid it heating up the bin). I add the bokashi compost directly to the bin in small quantities (it has lactic acid in it from the lactobacillus bacteria). If you have any questions, let me know. I have lots of pictures on my FB page if you want to see them. Search . I'm not raising BSFs right now intentionally, but I have found some of their larvae in a couple of my bins. I leave them in to help compost.

Hey Lisette! I would love to come see the cavies- I live at University & Hardy so must not be far from you at all. I haven't seen any ads for cavies for sale in AZ, but there seems to be a breeder in Houston ( and it wouldn't be the longest of trips to go out there and get them, though I wouldn't be able to manage it for a few months yet.
