Report: Illicit urban chicken movement growing in US

The Worldwatch Institute reports that a growing number of US city-dwellers are raising their own chickens, often in defiance of local ordinances.

Citing unsanctioned henhouses in Denver, Boston, and other cities, Worldwatch’s Ben Block notes that an “underground ‘urban chicken’ movement has swept across the United States in recent years,” flouting authorities’ concerns about noise, odors, and public health.

Simple, Homemade Solar Cookers

A friend is making one for me. He says the site says to use a 2 or 3 liter black pot with a clear glass lid. He found a suitable pot at Fry's for about 8 bucks. I'll let you know whether I have success with it.

Fed up with mass-produced food, more young urbanites decide to hit the dirt

Baby Steps - Time to Start Composting

I went to the dump (ok, to be PC, the landfill) at 27th Avenue & Lower Buckeye Road and picked up a compost container. For $5 you can go pick up one or more former garbage bins. They're the size of the recycle/blue containers, the bottoms have been sawn off and holes have been drilled into the sides. It fit in the back of my Suburban just fine.
