Profile Information

About Me:
I live in the flood-irrigated old neighborhood in Tempe and am converting my large yard into a teaching/community garden for the East Valley.

Working with my business partner, we are bringing eco-friendly, chemical free, all natural home cleaning products to market. Herb'n Organics products are currently available at the Downtown Phoenix Public Market, Tempe Feed and Tack, Whole Foods Markets statewide, the Urban Market in Phoenix, and the Tempe Farmers Market. Check out our website and buy online. Also available is our Go Green Dog shampoo and crate and bed spray. Our Arctic Blast is extremely effective in the garden: it gets rid of aphids, white fly, ants and fungus gnats with one treatment...safely!

For several years I did a television program, The Urban Gardener, on Chandler Educational Television Channel 99. We focused on issues of sustainability in the Valley.

I have a doctoral degree in Botany from ASU and specialize in island ecology. I have 2 herding dogs, an unfriendly cat and a wonderful Frenchman in my life.

Buying the Mission

I love my Tom’s Shoes! They are simple slip on flats, no arch support, cool fabric-all cotton…and my buying these shoes enabled Tom’s to provide another pair of shoes FREE to a child in a developing nation who would otherwise be going without. That’s their mission: 2 pair of shoes;one for me and one for a child in need somewhere. I bought the mission; I bought the shoes.

And I find myself doing that more and more frequently. I buy fair trade organic coffee from Cartel Coffee Lab here… Continue

I planted English Lavender in my garden, but as everything else flourishes, it just sits. It doesn't seem to flourish or die. ??? I wondered if you have any hints, since you have such success, that you wouldn't mind sharing.

Hi Diann! I'm so glad you like the chicken earrings. :-)) And a little jealous that they got to go to France. They are better traveled than I am-LOL!! Have a great 2010.

Hi Diann! Thanks so much for the tour of your beautiful garden this past weekend. I got so many new ideas for my own yard! And your chickens are adorable. :-) I'll be putting a little Christmas surprise in the mail to you tomorrow. Have a wonderful holiday season!

Your education, experience, obvious love of nature and all the critters made your generous tour of your space a delight! As did your non-didactic attitude. Let's have a cuppa' sometime. I've been known to go to Tempe and return unscathed to Old Town Scottsdale. Best in all your endeavors.

Hey Diann!
Did you hear from Joy Borum? She came to the tour and really enjoyed it! Has some wonderful comments on her page about it. Thanks for opening up your place to new faces!!! Ericka

Dear Diann, First, sorry for misspelling your first name. Second, in my enthusiasm for your tour and sharing yesterday, I just realized I probably would have been wiser not to so specifically identify where we live. Would you be good enough to delete that part of my comment?

Thank you, thank you again for your wonder-full tour of your space yesterday! We loved it and especially loved your attitude and approach. Also look forward to using your and your partner's organic cleaning (and other uses) products.

Your tour today was outstanding. I may follow-up with you when I have time to get your take again on those woodchips (I will be installing them off the road, so they cannot be lightwt) and perhaps on some fruit trees for lawn recommendation.
Thanks again for sharing !
