Is there any reason (other than spines) not to plant arid fruit or veggie plants next to cactus?

They only problem I can think of is that even the more drought tolerant native veggies and herbs might still need too much water for a cactus.

Although, I could be wrong...the only cactus I have are two 25-30 feet tall Saguaro and a 15 foot tall Mexican Fencepost. I NEVER water them.
Depends on how big you want your cactus to get. I've got an entire bed of not-so-arid vegies planted between my two lingua de baca cacti and they are pushing toward six feet tall. Both were volunteers that fell over the wall from the original mother plant. I cut them back every spring...

What about grapes next to nopales?
