Maricopa County Food System Coalition Forum

to support and grow a food system in Maricopa County that thrives

Maricopa County Food System Coalition Forum is a social network

There are a lot of new folks here and I thought I might share a few of my favorite things about this website...

Search Function

One of the best functions I love about this website is the search function at the top right corner of the page.  If you want to know what has been posted about a certain topic (i.e. chicken scorpion stings, harvest mesquite beans, prickly pear jelly, citrus phyllids, whatever!) that's the best way to find it.

If you want to get the ear of people keeping chickens, goats and other microlivestock - you want to join the MicroLivestock Group!  Here you can browse all the posts about almost any topic related to rabbits, fowl, goats, etc. - and if it's not there already, that is the place to post questions you might have.  There is a separate group that specializes in keeping fish and plants together, aka Aquaponics and many of us who keep fish have posted our systems here.

Another great group is the Native & Perennial Foods.  Here you can find discussions around the types of plants that grow locally and meet the people trying them.  There are also some extensive lists I posted here awhile back from the book, Perennial Vegetables: From Artichokes to Zuiki Taro, A Gardener's G... by Eric Toensmeier.  It was a three part post that listed the varieties he recommended for hot climates, including the Southwest, Southern CA and the Southeast.  There is also postings on Bermuda Grass, growing Chayote, Western Soapberry, Banana Yucca and lots of others.

One of my personal favorites is Growing Gourmet, a place to share how to actually use all these edibles we grow!  Many postings include photos and recipes!

Of course there are so many more.  To see all the Groups, check out the "Groups" tab at the top of the page.

Forum Discussions

The Forum is an open discussion platform where conversations are started regularly around different relevant topics.  They tend to get lost in the shuffle over time, but can be found again when you do a search function.  The most popular forum discussions became the basis for the 'Groups'.  The forum is divided into the following categories:

General Discussion (if it doesn't fit in another category)

Zone 00 - the "Self" (food, health, hygiene, family etc.)

Zone 0 -- the Home (Green Building, Feng Shui, etc.)

Zones 1 - 5 -- our Yards, Gardens, Farms (plants, pests, soil, seed...

Water: Rain water, Greywater, Water harvesting, Water Supply, etc

Animals (non-human category)

Local Issues (zoning, business and other trends)

Alt Energy

Community Events

Community Bazaar : stuff and services for barter, trade, sale, or FREE

Let me know if you found this helpful and please share your favorite things about this website.

Cheers all and happy growing!
