to support and grow a food system in Maricopa County that thrives

Dear Gardening Community,
My name is Joshua Patterson I am posting this message to let you know
about a program I am trying to get started in Portland, Oregon.
Its called Yard Sharing. We all have that strip of grass between the
street and the sidewalk or that patch of grass we always neglect on
the side or in the back of our yard. Maybe your neglected space is in
your front yard.
Here in Portland our community gardens are overwhelmed with people. We
have too many people who want to have a garden and not enough space.
So I have gotten the idea of sharing yards with people who want or
need food producing gardens.
I have created a website where people can post spaces available or
people can post that they would like to create a garden. Its free I
will never charge to post or view or anything like that. I am just
trying to build a sustainable community and find a good way to allow
people to grow their own food.
Please check out our website at http://www.yardsharing.org and let us
know what you think. If you have ideas about how we can make this
program grow please let us know..

Joshua - This is EXACTLH what I've been thinking about the last couple of years. I'm taking the Permaculture Design course, so called the city (Mesa, AZ) to find out if it would be ok to try to create community gardens in that space..starting with mine (16'6"x51'). They called back within 2 hours to say that would be ok, as long as I don't plant anything too tall (i.e.. corn) as that would limit visibility (probably a safety concern). My thought is that I'm going to start with mine (its irrigated by the city by the way); and see what I can do about getting the idea to catch on in the neighborhood. Have to do something...ridicuolous that all these office parks water their grass (and it all runs downhill into the street), when you could raise food there; and yet the food banks shelves are empty. I grew up on a farm, but my gardening expertise is very limited, which is why I'm taking classes through the Permaculture Guild... Hoping that I will find some people in the neighborhood who want to participate...and know a heck of a lot more about gardening than I do.
