Desert Tortoise Returned!!!!!

Amazing news! Sunday is often a big day away from home. While we were gone to our Sunday meeting and later Costco, someone brought our Pepito back.. We came home to find him in our grass all nice and clean and appeared in good health. When he saw me he walked right to his hibernation area. His bed was not returned, but Pepito went right back to the door of his home and waited for me to open it. He crawled in and is happily back to bed for a few weeks more.

We went around the… Continue

grape leaf problem

Every year I get yellow and black striped caterpillars that totally eat (skeletonize) my grape leaves. My grapes are coming in really nicely right now, but I see little white flies buzzing around them. I don't know if they have anything to do with the yellow and black caterpillars or not? Any suggestions for a natural preventative?

4-25-10

Harvested my first fennel today! Was nice a big and fat. I saved all the leaves for cooking and tea and saved the stalks for chewing, for now. Will need to find some recipes. All tomatoes all growing very well, most of which are heirlooms. Been eating some of the red cherry and have tomatoes growing on most all the other plants. Can't wait for those Mr. Stripeys! Pulled up all the peas about two weeks ago, shucked the remainder and saved seeds from the dried ones. Harvested peas from approx Dec… Continue

garden progress

My garden has been and is such a wonderful place to spend time. I have been out there most of the morning. The garden buddies have been napping in the shade. I have been trimming some plants such as my lavender that has overgrown its boundries . Yesterday I pulled most of my pea plants and last evening planted some Moon and Stars watermelon in thier place. mmmmmmmmmmm watermelon. I have had a serious lack of pollinators around this year so I have been hand pollinating my squash and…

Missing Desert Tortoise

So you may recall that while we were growing giant pumpkins, we went away for a short vacation. When we returned, all but one of our pumpkins were gone - the vine all torn up. Someone appeared to have messed with our pool equipment - spa ws drained and the watefall appeared to be on but drained. The drinks out of our minifrdige were drunk with cans on the floor.

Well, this time when we went away, our desert tortoise turned up missing. At first we thought maybe he found a way to get… Continue

Why is my orange sour from the top?

I bought this fruit tree from Moon Valley Nursery. I planted about 5 years ago. The frist bottom-half tree produces great taste, but the 2nd top-half tree tastes sour (very rough, bumpy, deformed orange peel). It looks like the sour orange comes from sucker. I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me why my tree is like that? Is there something that I have to get rid of branches? Your feedback will help me what I am doing wrong.

I finally built an herb spiral

I've been talking about it for a while. Looked up all 4 pictures on the internet of other peeps herb spirals and thought i could do that. I've got some nice rocks I gathered from near or on various mountains* and took lots of pics of the build. I posted it on another forum, but I had the mod delete the thread for lack of interest.

Maybe some folks around here will appreciate it more.

Since this is my blog though, it really doesn't matter here. I'll post them for my own… Continue

I have been thinking of the things I am actually willing to spring money for. Most of my gardening, chickening, and decorating is with found, scrounged, squeegeed (another blog on that sometime), or thrift store found treasures ... "junk". But there are little things that I value enough to actually pay a bit for. I do pinch the penny there and find the best for the least. But I will buy it rather than do without. Some…
