Hoski Schaafsma replied to jeff lauffer's discussion What is this vegetable plant ?
"You mentioned above that the plant was taking up too much of the garden but that you do not want to pull it up, we too have had various squash and gourds try to take over the garden, we have simply moved the vines or cut them back into "their…"

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Danica's discussion Carob in the group Native & Perennial Foods
"Hi Danica and all Some info on the tree--I'm not a fan of carob so I'm not sure whether the pods are extra sweet or not compared to other trees since I have not sampled many.  They are mildly sweet to my taste. "

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Matt Haberkorn's discussion Has anyone harvested cholla buds before? in the group Native & Perennial Foods
"Hi, We harvested the bud of the chain-fruit cholla last year, this year we are harvesting the buds from the buck horn and stag horn.  First, they are not at all like nopal cactus pads.  To remove the spines we used the method depicted in…"

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Michelle Neeley's discussion Citrus in new compost pile?? in the group Soil Builders
"Regarding the issue of keeping the compost pile wet, if you have a drip system set up in your yard, run a drip-line through the pile, our compost ate up a Christmas tree in just over a year."

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Sharon Austerman's discussion Is there a way to fertilize my lawn without harming my dogs? in the group Soil Builders
"Hi Sharon, There are many people in the valley who have horses and need to have the manure removed--if you can find manure that is at least one year old it will provide great fertilizer for your lawn.  You can often get it for…"

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Marsha Cleaveland's discussion Compost - what should NOT be used around vegetables?
"Even a little water goes a long way--we had a Chirstmas tree decompose over one summer. We composted huge amounts of oleander and other plants in our compost and had no problems with any of it."

Hoski Schaafsma replied to Marsha Cleaveland's discussion Compost - what should NOT be used around vegetables?
"If you have a drip system set up, run a water line, like a 1/4" soaker hose through the pile--the water with the heat of the summer decomposes virtually everything very quickly."

About Me:
We are repairing an old house using many different green ideas. We are rebuilding walls using 'urbanite' (broken concrete from sidewalks, etc.) since the previous owner had left large piles on the property (we are looking for more if anyone wants to get rid of any).

We are also setting up a water harvesting system on the property, primarily using changes to micro-topography following lessons learned from study of prehistoric water harvesting techniques.
