Victorian Wildfires

The recent wildfires in the state of Victoria followed a very hot dry spell in southern Australia. Fire activity that started on the 7th of Feb is ongoing in that state. Australian vegetation is adapted to fire and many species rely on regular "burning off" for the successful germination of seed. "Fire stick" burning was practiced on a rotational basis by the indigenous aboriginal population for over 40,000 years. Since the European "invasion" 200 years ago this has by and large been halted.… Continue

harry,
that's good to know about the sap. the closest i've ever had to a fig was a fig newton (cookie) i'm going to start sampling some and see if i can't find one that i like.
that's a shame that they were bulldozing them, i hope they didn't charge much for the cuttings. seems like they shouldn't care if they're going to trash them anyway. well, lots of stuff in the world doesn't seem to make sense now, does it? it is very fortunate (for the figs and people who love them) that you were indeed able to salvage them. if i ever make it to that side of earth, i'll stop by for a fig tasting =) thanks for the site you referenced, i'm going to look into it.

hi harry,
mine are probably about 1/2 the size of that, wow! (and i thought mine were GIANT, haha) i think they're just about to flower now, so i am hoping to collect some seeds to save and share as well. this is my first year that i've started my garden so it's quite a learning experience. i also have some a mesclun lettuce mix that i've planted and some of them are a bit spicy too, which i love, but i fed a salad to my boyfriend and never having ate stuff fresh out of a garden, was sure something was wrong with it, lol haha. i only wish i had more time to garden ;)
