This is the first all winter garden at my new house and it going much better than expected. It's planted on the south side of the house with the neighbors 6 foot block wall casting a complete shadow on 90% of the garden but it going very well for the just scrapping the rocks off and adding some compost and steer manure to the ground.

Yup. Native soil. All the minerals the plants could ask for. You added the missing nitrogen and organic material. And shade is OK for leafy vegetables. Congrats.
If the area is painted white or a light pastel it may reflect more light around in the area.
